IRIS attends MOWE celebrations
The IRIS team members represent the project at the Month of the woman entrepreneur (MOWE). MOWE has been developed as a part of an Irish- Aid Funded partnership Program which, between 2002 and 2004 worked to promote Women’s Entrepreneurship Development and Gender equality (WEDGE) in Ethiopia, Tanzania and Zambia. The second phase of 2005-2008 expanded geographically to Kenya and Uganda.
The aim of MOWE is to promote the role of women entrepreneurship development in national development by recognizing the achievements and potential of women entrepreneurs. The event targets Women entrepreneur associations, Employers’ Organizations, Ministries of Labour or Trade and Industry, Non-governmental organizations supporting entrepreneurship, Donor, development agencies and Trade Unions.
In Tanzania, MOWE celebrations take place every year in October. For the past eleven years it has been taking place in Dar es Salaam. This year’s event took place at Nyerere square in Dodoma from 17th October to 22nd October 2018. The event involved entrepreneurs from different parts of the country and the neighboring countries like Uganda, Kenya and Burundi. MOWE Celebrations in Dodoma consist of different events such as exhibitions and seminars.
The event was opened by Honourable Charles Mwijage the Minister of Trade and Industry. During his speech Mr. Mwijage advised the entrepreneurs to use MOWE as a platform to learn, network and market their products. He also promised that his ministry will increase support to women creativity and innovation.
One of the challenges addressed at MOWE is the failure of other sectors to participate in the event. The absence of these sectors in the event limits the access of official information needed by entrepreneurs to take their business to the next level.
